Rivers residents decry epileptic power supply, bad road

Miniorlu Market and the deplorable road
RESIDENTS of Mini-Orlu and Elioparanwo in the Obio/Akpo Local Government Area of Rivers State have expressed dissatisfaction with the epileptic power supply in the area.

They said they did not enjoy power regularly despite huge payment of electricity bills to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company.
The residents also raised the alarm over the non-repair of the Mini-Orlu Market Road in spite of several calls to the state government to repair it.
They explained that people of the area only enjoyed electricity supply once or twice in two weeks, adding that the situation had been on for over a year.
A resident, Emeka Emegwa, who spoke with Southern City News on Sunday expressed surprise that while Rumuevrlu, a neighbouring area, had been enjoying uninterrupted power supply for five days, the community had been without power for about six days.
Emegwa explained that businesses within Mini-Orlu and some parts of Elioparanwo area were dying as a result of poor power supply and bad roads.
He said, “We learnt that our Governor, Nyesom Wike, has awarded contracts for some of the roads. We thank him for his effort, but he should remember the Mini-Orlu Market Road.”
Also, a meat seller in Mini-Orlu Market, who identified himself simply as Alhaji Omiosetakoko, alleged that PHED was comfortable supplying electricity to areas where top government officials stayed, to the detriment of other areas.
“If there is a big government official in this Mini-Orlu Market Road, we will be enjoying power like those on Rumuevrlu Street. A police boss lives on the street and that is why they have constant electricity,” Omiosetakoko said.
Another Mini-Orlu Market road resident, who said he had been living in the area for the past eight years, called on the electricity company to improve the power supplied to the area, adding that a situation where residents would be denied of electricity for many days was unacceptable.
“Despite not having electricity, PHED officials still bring their bills and we pay for what we are not served. PHED should find a solution to this,” the resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
However, a PHED official, who did not want his name mentioned, said the imbalance in the supply of electricity to Elioparanwo residents, was as a result of vandalised facilities of the electricity company in the area.
The PHED official told Southern City News that the company was working towards repairing the vandalised facility in Elioparanwo.
He said, “Vandals were responsible for the situation in Elioparawo. But we are working towards repairing the vandalised facility in the area.”
